Minimising harm key driver for latest Pilbara wide liquor restrictions
A number of restrictions to further minimise alcohol related harm in the Pilbara region will come into effect from 31 March 2019 following a decision by the Director of Liquor Licensing.
- Restrictions aim to reduce alcohol-related violence in the region which is well above the metropolitan, regional and State rates.
- Responsible drinkers will not be significantly impacted.
- Consistent restrictions across the region will reduce the likelihood of people travelling or relocating to other towns to obtain liquor.
Director of Liquor Licensing, Duncan Ord said the imposition of further restrictions on the accessibility and consumption of liquor by at-risk persons in the region was in the public interest.
“The abuse of alcohol in the Pilbara continues to have a negative impact on the community in terms of domestic violence, child abuse, crime and anti-social behaviour.
“While it is acknowledged that the issues surrounding drug and alcohol-related harm are incredibly complex and cannot be solved by any single solution, we do know that liquor restrictions have proven to reduce harm.
“Restrictions also afford greater opportunity for social service providers to engage with at-risk drinkers to achieve long-term change.
“These restrictions will go some way towards addressing the problem,” he said.
Responsible drinkers and legitimate tourists are not expected to be negatively impacted by the restrictions.
The restrictions come following submissions from the WA Police to implement strategies to combat the effects of alcohol related abuse on the community and ensure public safety.
The Director of Liquor Licensing considered evidence from a number of stakeholders including licensees, other state government agencies, local government authorities and the public.
“Addressing alcohol-related harm and abuse is a community wide responsibility and cannot be ignored, because its effects are widespread,” said Mr Ord.
“Ultimately everyone benefits from having safer, healthier communities.
“I am hopeful that these restrictions together with other Government initiatives will be the catalyst for positive and sustained change in the Pilbara region.”
