Council Member Essentials Training

Nov 16, 2021, 13:52 PM

Following the 2021 Ordinary Elections, local governments are reminded that under the Local Government Act 1995, council members must complete the Council Member Essentials (CME) training course.

This must be completed within the first 12 months of being elected, unless the member is exempt.

This training supports council members to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to perform their role as community leaders.

A council member may be exempt if they have completed all the modules and passed the CME course or the Diploma of Local Government 52756WA (Elected Member):

  • since September 2019, when the CME requirement was introduced; or
  • the LGASS00002 Elected Member Skill Set course before 1 July 2019 and within the five years preceding their election.

A council member seeking an exemption must provide evidence for the CEO to ascertain whether the member is exempt, and publish relevant information regarding that member’s training on the local government’s website.

Newly elected council members should complete their training before 16 October 2022.
