State Memorial Service — Mr Shane Keith Warne (1969 to 2022)
Following the sad passing of cricketing great, Mr Shane Warne, the Victorian Department of the Premier and Cabinet has advised that a State Memorial Service will be held in his honour at 7pm (AEDT) on Wednesday 30 March 2022, at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Details regarding attendance at the service and livestreaming.
Mr Warne made his test debut for Australia in 1992. A leg-spinner, he set a world record of 708 test wickets which stood until 2007. He played his last test in 2007 having taken more Ashes wickets than any other Australian or English player. He also played for his home state of Victoria, Hampshire in England, and the Rajasthan Royals as both captain and coach between 2008 and 2011. In 2011, he joined the Melbourne Stars for the inaugural season of the Big Bash League.
In 2000, Mr Warne received an Australian Sports Medal, for service to sport. In 2001, he was awarded the Centenary Medal, for outstanding service to the Australian and international sport of cricket. He was named one of the five Wisden Cricketers of the 20th Century and was inducted into the International Cricket Council Cricket Hall of Fame in 2013.
As a mark of mourning and respect, flags are being half-masted across the country on the day of the memorial service. The Australian National Flag should be flown at half-mast all day on Wednesday 30 March 2022 from all buildings and establishments occupied by Western Australian government departments and affiliated agencies. Other organisations are encouraged to participate.
In accordance with flag protocol, all flags and ensigns at each flag station should be flown at half-mast during daylight hours. However, should it be the custom to fly the flags of other nations at your flag station, it would be appropriate to seek permission from the diplomatic representatives of that nation to half-mast their flag.
Ministerial Offices are requested to disseminate this information to all relevant agencies within their Minister’s portfolio.
