More active opportunities for underprivileged remote Kimberley youth
DLGSC is funding a scheme to provide more sporting opportunities and second-hand sporting equipment for at-risk children and youth in under-serviced remote communities in the Kimberley region.
A total of $150,000 over three years will go towards the Fit and Active Kimberley program which will be delivered by Fair Game Australia
Australia in partnership with DLGSC, local community organisations, agencies and local government authorities.
The funding will go directly towards supporting Fair Game staff and volunteers to travel to remote communities in the Kimberley to deliver a range of programs that will be run during school holidays when other services take a break.
The programs include:
- Seven week-long trips annually for three years across 10 remote communities.
- Provision of ‘Game on!’ program which encourages active communities through a combination of team-based sports games, fun fitness challenges and Fair Game’s unique Indigenous yoga program.
- Provision of the Healthy Communities program which uses fun, interactive health education activities to engage children in evidence-based practices in the areas of oral, feet, ear and hand hygiene and nutrition.
The main aim of the initiative is to help young people be physically active by providing more opportunities for sport and social interaction, while addressing risk factors and social determinants of health.
The programs will be delivered in Pandanus Park, Fitzroy Crossing, Bayulu, Muludja, Wangkatjungka, Yiyili, Halls Creek, Mulan and Balgo.
Fair Game have a strong history of delivering unique health and fitness programs and recycled sports equipment to vulnerable communities.
