16 Days in WA: promoting an end to violence against women
Today marks the start of 16 days of activism, from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day), to help raise awareness of and prevent violence against women.
16 Days in WA is a campaign led by the Department of Communities that promotes equality, respectful relationships, violence-free spaces and safer communities.
During this period, prominent West Australians from all walks of life will be sharing messages on the importance of ending violence against women, while landmarks across WA will be lit up in orange, the campaign colour.
Throughout the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, many women have reported experiencing family and domestic violence for the first time or the worsening of existing violence.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders, people with disabilities, LGBTQI+ and people from CaLD backgrounds are also overrepresented in family and domestic violence statistics.
