Electoral matters timeline

When tranche one reforms to elections and council representation will be implemented.

October 2023 elections

  • Consistency in size and structure of councils (if there are staged changes for some local governments, these will then be finalised by October 2025 elections)
  • Extending the election period (to account for slower postal services)
  • Return and destruction of the electoral roll
  • Offences relating to the misuse/inappropriate use of the electoral roll
  • Information about candidates to be published (candidate statements)
  • Backfilling extraordinary council vacancies after an election
  • Backfilling vacancies due to election of an incumbent councillor to position of mayor or president
  • Counting provisions (optional preferential voting).

October 2025 elections

  • Statewide caretaker period
  • Consistency in size and structure of councils (if there are staged changes for some local governments, these will then be finalised)
  • Re-counts of votes
  • Enrolment changes to address ‘sham’ leases
  • Additional information provided by candidate as part of nomination process about being on the occupier roll.
