Young people in WA’s Mid West met and learnt tips some of Australia’s best sporting champions as part of the Champions 2 Country tour that took place 14-15 November 2019.

Four Olympic and Commonwealth Games athletes visited 10 schools and community sports clubs in Geraldton, Northampton, Dongara, Chapman Valley and Mingenew.

The athletes that took part in the Mid West tour were:

  • swimmer Tamsin Cook: Olympian, 2016 (silver medal)
  • hockey player Trent Mitton; triple Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 2010, 2014, 2018
  • gymnast Olivia Vivian: Olympian, 2008; Commonwealth Games 2014 (silver medallist)
  • Athlete/heptathlete Kylie Wheeler: Olympian, 2004, 2008; Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 2002.

One of the main objectives of the tour was for the athletes to share their sporting experiences and help inspire young people on issues such as healthy lifestyles, teamwork, leadership, respect, and finding the motivation to achieve goals.

The tour was organised by the Australian Olympic Committee (WA) and Commonwealth Games Australia (WA) with the support of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC).
