Media release
The venue has undergone upgrades to toilets and change rooms, new paintwork and signage to internal areas, and application of anti-slip coatings to entrances, corridors and the internal roller hockey surface.
These works have enhanced the internal and external areas of the venue and ensured the venue upholds the highest safety standards for all visitors and competitors, while also creating jobs and stimulating the local economy.
In 2016 the venue received a $2.52 million upgrade, installing a new 250 metre timber velodrome cycle track ensuring the venue continues to operate to international training and competition standards. New LED competition lighting was installed in 2019.
Certification has been received from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) which is the worldwide governing body for cycling. The venue is now compliant to UCI standards.
The SpeedDome has been the training ground for some of our greatest Western Australian cycling champions, including Cameron Meyer, Sam Welsford and Melissa Hoskins.
Over its history, the SpeedDome has hosted State, national and international events, including the prestigious 1997 UCI Track Cycling World Championships.
VenuesWest owns the venue on behalf of the State Government and the funding has come from its existing capital works budget.
