Hon. David Templeman approved the allocations as part of the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries (DLGSC) Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program.

WA’s Open Golf Championship began in 1913 making it one of Australia’s oldest professional tournaments. The 2022 event is being held from Thursday 20 October to Sunday 23 October and will see Western Australia play host to leading players from across the country. The $30,000 in Sport and Recreation Event Funding will go towards administration costs and marketing and promotional activities. The event is being shown on Foxtel, Kayo and Sky NZ for the first time to a TV audience of about 300,000. It is also being broadcast on radio stations.

Meanwhile Wembley Lacrosse Club used $10,000 towards fees and venue hire for the U15 Boys and Girls National Tournament, held 28 September to 4 October 2022, at HBF Arena in Joondalup. 18 teams from Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New Zealand took part. It was a development opportunity for 12-15-year-olds and the first chance for high-performance recognition and tournament play. Players progress through to U18 and senior national tournaments, which align with high-performance camps for Australian representatives. Western Australia will host the U18 nationals in 2023 and then the senior nationals in 2024.

There is more than $850,000 available over two rounds of the Sport and Recreation Events Funding Program in 2022/23. The first round is for events from 1 January to 30 June 2023 and the second round is for events from 1 July to 31 December 2023.

“The State Government is proud to support events such as the 2022 WA Open Golf Championship — a tradition since 1913 and now a major event on the PGA Australasian Tour,” Mitch Hardy, Executive Director of Sport and Recreation said.

“The WA Open gives the opportunity for our leading amateurs to pit their skills against the country's leading professionals. It’s expected 3000 spectators will take advantage of free entry over four days starting at the Western Australian Golf Club on Thursday.

“It is also a chance to showcase our State on major TV sports channels. The Championship will no doubt introduce people to golf and inspire more West Australians to take up the game.

“I would encourage hosts of other Sport and Recreation events across the State to apply for relevant Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries funding programs.”
