Financial Sustainability and Governance Review of WA Racing Industry

An independent review is underway to help ensure the Western Australian racing industry’s long-term financial sustainability.

The WA racing industry contributes more than $1.3 billion to the State’s economy each year and supports thousands of local jobs.

An independent review has commenced to ensure the industry is well placed for the future. It will look at ways thoroughbred, harness and greyhound racing can remain viable across WA.

The Financial Sustainability and Governance Review will examine structures under the Racing and Wagering Western Australia Act 2003 that support and develop the industry. Jockey and animal welfare matters are not part of the review.

The review will be led by Professor Warren Harding AM and Hon David Templeman, former Mandurah MLA.

Professor Harding has more than 30 years’ experience in government and corporate roles, including serving as a managing partner with international consulting firms. From 2017 to 2019, he was the Government’s nominee for the Sustainable Health Review, which focused on creating a patient‑centred, high‑quality and sustainable health system by improving the use of technology and addressing social factors that affect health. Click here for full bio.

Mr David Templeman was elected to the Western Australian Legislative Assembly in February 2001 and served for more than 24 years in State Parliament as the Member for Mandurah. Throughout his political career, Mr Templeman worked across multiple portfolios, including Child Protection, Local Government, Culture and the Arts, Tourism, Heritage, International Education, and Sport and Recreation. Click here for full bio.
