Multicultural Female Uniform Guidelines

Women from culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) backgrounds are now be able to participate in sport more easily, with the release of this Australian-first multicultural uniform guide.

Football (Australian Rules)

This uniform guideline aims to show the different options for girls and women to participate in AFL in Western Australia.

Option A

  • Club uniform shorts and jersey
  • Long club socks.

Option B

  • Club uniform shorts and top
  • Long sleeve skins/top underneath top – can be all black or club approved colour
  • Full length skins leggings under shorts in all black or club approved colour.

Option C

  • Long sleeve jersey
  • Full length skins leggings under shorts in all black or club approved colour
  • Head covering in all black or club approved colour.

Players must not wear anything that is dangerous to themselves or another competitor. This includes no jewellery and no sharp pins on head coverings (hijabs).

  • If the head covering needs to be fastened, clips and non-sharp pins are to be used
  • Head covering must be all black or club colours.
  • Head covering must not be attached to the shirt.

Additional information:

  • Additional clothing options are for cultural/religious modifications only.
  • Extra clothing must be the same colour approved by the club.
  • Extra clothing must be worn under existing team uniform.

Basketball

This uniform guideline aims to show the different options for girls and women to participate in Basketball in Western Australia.

Option A

  • Club uniform shorts and top.

Option B

  • Club uniform shorts and top
  • Skin tight leggings/undershorts in black or club approved colour, under shorts
  • Skin tight undershirt (long or short) in all black or club approved colour.

Option C

  • Club uniform shorts and top
  • Head scarf
  • Skin tight leggings/undershorts in black or club approved colour, under shorts.
  • Skin tight undershirt (long or short) in all black or club approved colour.

Multicultural Female Uniform Guidelines head covering

Head coverings

  • Headscarves are permitted to be worn this includes head scarves or other fabric articles worn for religious purposes held in place by bobby pins or snap clips.
  • Players are permitted to take the court wearing bobby pins and/or one touch or snap clips to hold head scarfs in place as long as these items pose no threat to any player on the court.
  • Head covering should resemble the official colours of the association/club they are representing.

Additional information:

  • Extra clothing must be either black or the same colour approved by the club.
  • Extra clothing must be worn under the team uniform.
  • This guide is in addition to the rule governing undergarments in the 2017 FIBA rulebook.
  • These uniform allowances are applicable to all BWA associated leagues and competitions.

Option B

  • Club long sleeve shirt
  • Club pants or full length skins leggings under shorts in club approved colour

Players must not wear anything that is dangerous to themselves or another competitor. This includes no jewellery and no sharp pins on head coverings (hijabs).

  • If the head covering needs to be fastened, clips and non-sharp pins are to be used

Gymnastics

This uniform guideline aims to show the different options for girls and women to participate in gymnastics in Western Australia.

  • Long sleeve leotard with bike shorts
  • Safe uniform
  • Ideal for grassroots programs
  • Ideal for competitions
  • A full-length unitard also satisfies requirements.

Safe uniform

  • Long sleeve leotard with leggings or bike shorts
  • Tight fitting clothing, not a risk factor
  • Tight fitting clothing allowing coach to spot gymnast
  • Gymnast can perform basic inversions and rotations without interference.

Safe uniform

  • Long sleeve leotard with leggings or bike shorts
  • Secure fitted head covering
  • Tight fitting clothing, not a risk factor
  • Tight fitting head covering does not restrict vision
  • Tight fitting clothing allowing coach to spot gymnast
  • Gymnast can perform basic inversions and rotations without interference.

Unsuitable

  • Floppy head covering
  • Loose long sleeve top
  • Long baggy pants
  • Loose clothing may cause entanglement on apparatus
  • Loose clothing or head covering restricting gymnasts field of vision
  • Loose clothing restricting coaches’ ability to spot the gymnast
  • Loose clothing restricting gymnasts range of movement.
Gymnasts must remove jewellery and other ornaments likely to cause injury in the gym. These guidelines apply to females with cultural or personal requirements participating in grassroots gymnastics at Gymnastics WA-affiliated clubs.

Head coverings

Gymnasts must not wear anything that is dangerous to themselves or other participants. This includes no jewellery and no sharp pins on head coverings (hijabs).

  • Head coverings must be tight fitting and secure
  • The head covering can be secured by tucking it in at the neck or using Velcro, headbands or elastics
  • Head covering can be all black, all white or club colours.

Multicultural Female Uniform Guidelines head covering

Head coverings

  • Can be worn with any option
  • Must be tight and non-flowing
  • Can be tied but are not to be fastened with any pins or sharp objects
  • Should resemble the official colours of the team.

Additional information:

  • Extra clothing under uniform can be worn but should resemble the official colours of your team
  • Legs – leggings or track pants can be worn under shorts to cover legs
  • Arms – long sleeve tops can be worn under jersey or singlet to cover arms
  • Hair – head coverings can be worn to cover your hair at anytime
  • Footwear – enclosed athletic shoes for indoor volleyball and barefoot for beach volleyball.
